I Samuel 8:1-9, 19-22
Title: Rejecting the Lord
Introduction:
John was thirty-two, a deacon in his church and good family man. He had been stuck in the same position in his job for five years. It seemed the only way to get ahead in his office was to cheat and lie and John was tired of watching others get the better job. He decided that he would have to play the game if he was going to get ahead. Did he reject God?
Jane was seventeen and still had not had a date. She was active in her youth group at church and had friends but she very much wanted to have a boy friend. She noticed that many of the girls that "dressed sexy" and talk dirty had boys hanging around them all the time. She chose to change her image and her talk. Did she reject God?
Jack stood there listening to guys talking about weekend adventures at the bars and with women. He knew this was wrong but remained standing there listen and not saying a thing. Did he reject God?
Many sincere and good people never realize they are rejected God. Many of God's people, true born-again believers, never realize they are rejecting God. Why? Because Satan seldom deceives us into a direct attack on God nor does he deceive us into outright rejecting God but the result is the same; we reject the Lord.
God's chosen people, the Israelites, rejected their Lord by: 1) Refusing to be different, 2) by Seeking to Resolve their Problems in their Own Wisdom and Power, 3) by not Hearing nor Heeding to the Man of God
I. Refusing to be Different
1 Peter 2:9
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Not different for the sake of being different, but different because chosen to show "forth" His praises.
Why?
1 Peter 2:10
10 Which in time past were not a people, [We were nobodies] but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
The Bible teaches that we should be different in basically three areas:
1. Our Walk
The way we talk, we dress, were we go, what we do.
1 Thessalonians 2:12
That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.
2. Our Attitude
3. In our Dependency
The world says you can't depend on anyone but yourself. God says don't depend on yourself but depend on ME!
II. They Rejected God by Seeking to Resolve The Matter Without Him
There is a great contrast between Samuel and the elders of Israel. Samuel heard their request and didn't like but He took it to the Lord. The Elders heard and saw what was happening and took it upon them to solve it.
Jesus had a marvelous illustration of how the relationship between his people and him was in John 15
2 Corinthians 3:5
5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
III. They Rejected God by not Hearing nor Heeding the Man of God
Samuel was their warning sign, their alarm, their wakeup call. They did not hear him because they chose not to hear him.
There is a sin sickness that has taken our land. It is the ignoring of today's men of God. No respect and no heeding.
