Title: Foolish Words Uttered by a Fool

Text I Samuel 14:24-46

Introduction

You been caught by your words? I never will forget the day I was trying to "encourage" a jr. high girl to sing at church once. After putting fore my best plea and nudging her along, she turned and looked at me and said, "I'm doing the very thing that you have taught me not to do. You taught me not to give into peer pressure so why are you pressuring me?"

Our words catch us don't they? It's like the story I heard about a little girl.

One day, a girl walk to her mother and look at her mother's hair and sadly said: "Why are some of your hair white mom?"

The mother replied, "Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.

The girl thought about this revelation a while, and then said, "Momma, how come *all* of grandma's hairs are white?"

Foolish words come from foolish mouths and they can catch you. Saul utters some foolish words that caught him. Let's learn from what he did.

I. Saul was ruled by Emotion and not Conviction V. 24

Saul was angry, fearful, and determined that he was going to show Israel who was king. His emotions clouded his judgement. He spoke with emotions and not conviction. Emotions change -- The charge runs out of them. Convictions remain steadfast -- sure and unchanging.

Note a few things with me:

1. Word Spoke in a Emotional State.

Matthew 12:36

36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

2. We are Clearly Warned to Watch our Speech

Ephesians 4:29

29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Colossians 4:6

6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

3. We are Clearly Warned to Watch our Emotions

Proverbs 16:32

32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

Proverbs 25:28

28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

II. Misguided Intentions Can Do More Harm than Good v. 31-37

What is missing in this offering to God. In fact what is missing in this entire event? Saul assumes someone else has sinned. That's the reason that God hasn't answered! Right? Wrong! It wasn't someone else sin -- it was his!

Let's ask ourselves a few question at his point.

1. Why did Saul build an Alter? And When? And Why Were people eating animals with blood? And whose fault was that?

2. Who's Idea was it continue fighting? When was it stopped and why? Who got blamed for God not answering? -- The leaders

3. What were Saul's real intentions? Could it been, that he wanted to save face?

III. Rash Vows V.38

Ecclesiastes 5:4-5

4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. 5 Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.

Matthew 5:37

37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

A. Cost Him Respect

B. Ended the Chase

C. Cursed a Life v. 52
