I Samuel 14:6-16
Title: We might as well give up
Introduction:
Boy Scouts from the city were on a camping trip. The mosquitoes were so fierce, the boys had to hide under their blankets to avoid being bitten. Then one of them saw some lightning bugs and said to his friend, "We might as well give up. They are coming after us with flashlights."
Do you ever feel that way? That the Devil winning - At least he is winning in your little area of the world. Some times the enemy seems so great that we feel defeated before we even start.
In Chapter 13 of I Samuel, Saul, Israel's first king, was left with a dilemma. His newly formed nations was facing it's most fierce opposition yet -- 30,000 chariots, 6,000 warriors on horseback, and an uncountable number of foot soldiers. Saul's army had dwindled as many had ran to hid in the hills and caves that sounded that area. Saul had feel out of favor with the Lord and did not have the assurance that he needed -- When we lose fellowship with God because of sin in live we lose that assurance -- that directions that is needed to fight the enemy.
Israel needed a victory. Where would it come from? Not from Saul, be sure your sins will find you out! Then from were? From Saul's son Jonathan.
Jonathan becomes our example of how to find victory -- how to beat the enemy. These three elements and necessary for victory: 1) Courage, 2) Action, and 3) The Lord
I. Victory Starts with Courage, Courage is Always Founded on Faith, Faith is Always Set in Knowledge
Pastor Pastor Dale Johnsen tells this incredible story:
An amazing thing happened in Southern California. A Christian woman (we'll call her Jane) was a member of a fine evangelical church. She was a young bride of less than a year who joyfully anticipated each new dawn. But on one particular morning, happiness did not await her.
A knock came at her apartment door. Because her husband had already left for work, Jane was a little uneasy about opening the door. But she did. Standing in front of her was a man she'd never seen before. He seemed nervous, and that increased her uneasiness. He inquired about the location of the manager's apartment. She quickly gave him the information he needed and shut the door. In only a few minutes, another knock came. Cautious, but not cautious enough to restrain her action, Jane opened the door again. The long blade of the same man's knife pushed her back into the room. He locked and bolted the door, closed the drapes, and told her to completely disrobe.
At that fearful moment, Jane looked into the face of the would-be attacker and, with remarkable calmness, said: "I am a Christian. The Lord Jesus Christ is watching over me right now, and He is not going to allow anything to happen to me He doesn't want to occur." The man stared at her blankly. He was absolutely dumbfounded. She continued: "Jesus Christ loves you. He wants to come into your life and become your Lord and Savior."
Then she asked rather pointedly, "Have you ever had the gospel explained to you in a way you could understand it?" He lowered the blade and replied simply, "No." "Then, please, sit down." He shoved the knife into his pocket and sank into a chair. For the next hour and a half, Jane and the stranger discussed the claims of Christ. She learned he was new in the area and had no friends, no money, and no purpose in life. He told her that an "inner voice" told him to do what he had done that morning.
The courageous woman fearlessly pressed the issue. "Just as I opened my door to you, not knowing fully what to expect on the other side, so you must do the same in your life. Jesus awaits your decision to let Him in. Can you think of any reason you shouldn't do that?" He couldn't. She asked him to bow his head, and in his own words to accept the gift God was offering him - His own dear Son. He did. Shortly thereafter he was gone, never to return. And he never laid a hand on her!
After the man left, Jane was suddenly seized by fierce panic. She was immediately overwhelmed with her narrow escape from danger. Never before had Jane experienced so vividly the truth of Psalm 27:1-3.
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. 3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
Note the pattern in verse 6
1. Come let us go over -- That's Courage
2. I may be that the Lord will work for us - That's Faith -- What Courage is Built
3. there is no restraint fo the Lord -- That's Fact -- That's Knowledge -- What faith is built on.
II. Victory is in Action
Please note with me verses v.12-13
Let me ask you question. Why didn't Saul attack? Let me give you the nineties reason why Saul didn't attack: "It didn't "FEEL" right."
Why didn't you share the gospel? "Oh, pastor it just didn't feel right."
Why did you enter into immorality? "Oh, pastor it felt so right."
Why did you ever try drugs? "Oh, pastor if made be feel so good."
Why did you think it was a good worship service? "Oh, pastor it made me feel so good!"
This is a "feel-ly" society. So much so, that we are willing to throw out the FACTS!
Do you want to have a little victory in your home life? Let me share this with from a secular book:
At one seminar where I was speaking on the concept of proactivity, a man came up and said, "Stephen, I like what you're saying. But every situation is so different. Look at my marriage. I'm really worried. My wife and I just don't have the same feelings for each other we to have. I guess I just don't love her anymore and she does love me. What can I do?"
"The feeling isn't there anymore?" I asked.
"That's right," he reaffirmed. "And we have three children we're really concerned about. What do you suggest?"
"Love her," I replied.
"I told you, the feeling just isn't there anymore."
"Love her."
"You don't understand. The feeling of love just isn't there."
"Then love her. If the feeling isn't there, that's a good reason to love her."
"But how do you love when you don't love?"
"My friend, love is a verb. Love-the feeling-is a fruit of love, the verb. So love her. Serve her. Sacrifice. Listen to her. Empathize. Appreciate. Affirm her. Are you willing to do that?"
Let me read to you some verse from the Bible that express victory and you tell me if they don't contain Action!
James 4:7
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 1:22
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
Ephesians 6:10-13
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
III. Victory Comes from the Lord v.23
Pharaoh Could not Stand against Moses because he could not Stand Against God
The Giant could not stand against David because he could not stand Against God
The Lions Could not get a Daniel because they could not get by God
And Satan could not keep Christ in the Grave because he is not Match for our Lord!
Listen to me Sin does not need to reign in your life. Sin is no match of the blood of Jesus
Christ.
Depression and worry does not need to control you life. They are no match for Jesus Christ
Strife in your family doesn't need to control your home, it's no match for the power of Jesus.
Drugs, Alcohol, immorality, anger, fear, and failure are no match for Jesus.
Death was and is no match for Jesus.
Satan doesn't need to control your life anymore. Hell doesn't need to be your destiny and defeat doesn't need to be your song.
