First in Series of Christ in the Feast
The Feast of Trumpets
Leviticus 23:23-25
Introduction
A pattern isn’t the real thing. Imagine your daughter coming to you and saying I found this pattern at the sewing store and I plan on wearing it tomorrow.
Throughout the OT God gives us a pattern of the Real Christ and the Salvation He would bring. He did so in the making of the tabernacle and in the sacrifices AND also in his required festivals we often refer to as feast.
I chose the word festivals because these feasts were more festive than most Sunday morning worshippers. This is not to say that these feast were not serious acts of worship for they were indeed but they were joyful acts of worship.
This is especially true when it comes The Feast of the Trumpets that is also called the Feast of the Seventh New Moon. (Background)
The Seventh Moon marked the beginning of the New Civil (national) Year and it would serve both as a reminder the old and reminder to prepare for the new. We will look at the Call – What this feast called to the people and what it calls us to do also; We will look at the Convocation (Assembly – the Worship) and see what we call learn; and lastly we will attempt to pull it all together with a Conclusion – what the end was the end result of this feast and what result it should bring about in us.
A.
Rejuvenation (New Year)
This feast was often observed in celebration God’s Creation and of starting anew. It was to be observed with great joy.
Illustrate Nehemiah 8:1-12
Note: “this day is holy unto the Lord” We think that a great worship service is where we people crying and weeping but this ‘holy day’ was not to be so! Why? This was a day of new hope! Of new beginnings!
B.
Remembrance (Trumpet Sounded First at the Giving of the
Law)
Lest I give you the impression that this was some light heart carnival let us note that the call of this feast was to Remembrance.
Ex 19:16-19
The trumpet blew all day – long and loud, a constant reminder of the God’s Holy Law -- A law that they could not keep.
There was to be no work this day. This day was to be a day of worship and celebration. It was a pattern – a shadow of the rest that would be found in Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 4:9-11
9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. 10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
II.
The Convocation (Assembly)
This could be an interesting study for those that say they can worship God in nature as well as in church. Well, here is a worship service that’s timing was dictated by nature – the moon and God says, Assemble together.
There are always three elements of worship – sacrifice (giving until it hurts), Sanctification (Making Clean), Service (Doing something)
They were to meet to offer sacrifices. They would offer the regular daily sacrifices and the New Moon sacrifices and, in addition, these sacrifices:
Numbers 29:1-6
Note with me the sacrifice “one kid of goat for a sin offing.”
III.
The Conclusion
Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Hebrews 9:22
22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
D.
Resurrection
1 Thessalonians
4:16-17
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
