Lesson Three

Lesson Two Review

We are born again to what?

How important is hope to the suffering believer?

What part does the resurrection play in the “living hope”?

What part if any does hope play in the troubles of life?

Lesson Three Questions

We strong suggest that the student read the follow questions before reading the text. This will help the student to discover truths and comprehend what she or he has read.

What is our inheritance?

How durable is our spiritual inheritance?

Can troubles or suffer take our inheritance away?

What should be our perspective and understanding of our present troubles?

Daily Reading

Monday –       1 Peter 1:1-9

Tuesday –      Romans 8:12-25

Wednesday –            Romans 5:1-11

Thursday –     Psalm 66

Friday –          Hebrew 11:17-40

V. 4&5

Such an inheritance is better than that promised to Abraham. This inheritance is incorruptible, undefiled, and does not fade not away. It is reserved and kept by the power of God. Nothing could be surer!  The confidence of that surety is found in Faith. Faith in this present salvation and faith in the future salvation when with glorified bodies we stand in the presence of our Lord.

Every believer longs and looks forward to ‘the last time.’  To the time when time will have no meaning, death will be put underfoot and the grave will be declared null and void.  The earth longs for it and the believer faces life with confidence --we know the end.  We have read the last chapter. We know what really does lie around the bend of time.  It is a great inheritance – an inheritance of all that God has promised, and that inheritance is kept by God’s power. The inheritance is made real in our life today by faith.

V. 5

The NIV reads, “who through faith are shielded by God’s power” and the NABS reads “who are protect by the power of God.” Both give us the assurance that no matter what happens, the believer is protected by the power of God.

V. 6

Herein is the key to Christian rejoicing. Rejoicing even when we are in a season of distress, trouble and grief.

Peter reminds the scattered believers that the distress is only for a season. There is nothing that his world, Satan, nor any of his demons can through at us that we ever carry over into the future world of the believer. Sickness will not follow. Grief will not follow. Pain will not follow. Indeed we will suffer at times here on the earth and in some cases unjustly and for some greatly but it cannot rob us of our joy for we know the end.  Heaven awaits those that have been washed in the blood of Jesus.

It is wise to remember that Peter is speaking from experience. According to tradition he would suffer greatly for faith and be martyred.
