I Peter Chapter 2

Outline

Since Salvation v 1-3

Stones that are Alive v. 4-10

Strangers in an Alien Land v. 11-12

Submit to Civil Authority v. 13-17

Servants to the Silently Suffering and Sinless Shepherd or Our Soul v 18-25

Review

Reminded of the their cherished salvation obtained through the precious blood of Jesus, the believers, referred to as aliens to this world, are encouraged to stand strong by longing for the pure milk of the word. Peter then using Psalm 118 and rejected corner stone for a word picture proclaims all believers to be living stones. Peter under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is preparing a faith people to become even more faith because of the approaching hard times – a valuable lesson for all today.

V. 9 - 10

What an amazing statement is proclaimed by in this verse and worthy of some serious mediation. To proclaim all believers, even the gentile believer, to be a chosen race or nation is quite a proclamation. Yet it is true and also biblical.

Yet the number of the sons of Israel

Will be like the sand of the sea,

            Which cannot be measured or numbered;

And it will come about that, in the place

Where it is said to them,

“You are not My people,”

It will be said to them,

“You are the sons of the living God.

            Hosea 1:10 (NASB)

            And again:

. . . And I will say to thos who were not My people,

                        ‘You are My people!’

And they will say, ‘Thou art my God!”

                                    Hosea 2:23b (NASB)

Granting the titles that follow are almost as shocking when one takes a moment to think upon the title.

Royal because we serve King Jesus

Priest because we worship and Intercession

Holy because we are set apart to God

Nation because we are a collective body

A people of God because declare his praise

V. 10

Mercy is a word that should be on the lips of every believer and in also in their heart. Those outside of the chosen nation of Israel were to understand that their efforts did not grant this privilege to be called the children of God. It was God granting mercy.

How often we forget to show mercy to others.

Those to whom much is granted -- much is required.

V.11

Of all the words that seem be lost in today’s society, the word abstain is vanishing daily.  Withhold self from almost anything is often viewed as not expectable. This is especially true when it come to sex. We currently are in hot pursuit of any and all fleshly desires. And, the unfortunate truth is that much of this has appeared within the family of God.

The few confrontations that I have had with church members have been on this very subject. When in comes to controlling the flesh – many want that to apply to the other person and to them.

The order is to abstain – refrain is to mild a word. Abstain is to have nothing to do with it and includes the idea of avoiding it. That’s a shocker? Most believers would much better off if there were no TV and in some cases no computer in the house. Several books could be removed and many magazines. Even changing the radio station would be helpful. Avoiding that clerk that flirts would not hurt. To abstain, one needs to learn to avoid.

Why? Because such lust are at – WAR – with you very soul.

Watch over your heart with all diligence,

For from it flow the springs of life.

                        Proverbs 4:23 (NASB)
