Peter reaches out with this letter to a number of churches that are about to have their faith tested by persecution. His goal is to encourage and strengthen these believers. Many of these believers had been delivered from a pagan background. He does so by reminding them of the precious salvation they have gained through Jesus Christ and the inheritance that awaits them. He charges them to remain holy, focused on heaven; and they were brought with much suffering and the blood of Christ. He confirms the word that has been shared with by Paul as being the unfailing word with promises that never fade away.
Peter continues to remind believers of the blessing since salvation and also of the responsibilities because of salvation. A reflection on whom and what believers were before salvation and positive prospective on whom believers are after salvation can be found throughout chapter two.
Wherefore or therefore always implies something before. What Peter has reminded the believers before is of their salvation and blessing of that salvation. Since you have been saved then the produce of you salvation should be . . .
Since you have a sincere love for the brethren, other believers, then you set aside those sins that do not reflect love but rather reflect hate. Put aside malice. Malice is meanness in motion; it often has it roots in reprisal and bitterness. Unfortunately it is what we see so often in the local church. Some saint offends another and for the rest of their church life they live in the mode or ‘payback’.
If you wish to wear the white robes of heaven then you should put off the sinful robes of guile or craftiness especially concerning your treatment of other Christians. Envy should also be put away, a sin that haunts many preachers. Slander, which is sister to gossip, should be removed from the live of a Christian and last but not least hypocrisies must not hold a place in the life of a true Christian. Hypocrite was a word used for the early Greek actors that preformed street skits. It has the idea of pretending to be something that you are not. Of sins list in the first verse of the second chapter, the sin of hypocrisy seems to be the most prevalent.
The Christian would have an awesome testimony if he or she would only take verse on to heart.
As a baby desires milk for nourishment, so should a Christian desire the word. Evidence that person is saved is by what he or she no longer desires and by that which he or she now desires. People that have no desire to grow in the word – that seem to be indifferent toward the word of God, I have serious questions about their salvation. Salvation brings a new birth; and just like a baby that does not need to be taught to desire milk, the new Christian will wish to be feed the word. This may be why Peter follows with verse three.
It is interesting that the Holy Spirit had Peter include a desire for the pure (sincere KJV) milk. The pure milk is the unadulterated, the unpolluted milk, the milk that is not watered down. True Christian – even those new in the faith – do not want to be feed the watered down faith that is so often being taught and preached today. They want it full strength truth.
It is the word that allows us to grow. Today the emphasis is on worship services that make us feel good. Music that stirs our souls and skits seem to make up much of what we call worship but it is the word that grows the Christian. Ever so often I hear some dear souls say, “The Spirit was so strong that we just did away with the preaching.” Which spirit? People grow from getting into the word not the song. Now do not misunderstand. The music is strong method of worship and I enjoy it as much as the next person but people need the word.
